Roofs are responsible for protecting the house from rain water. In addition they protect the underlying rooms from cold and they are important structural elements. The shapes of the roofs constitute the result of diversified traditions in local and regional constructions. While roofs with an inclination under 50° must be insulated, for those with higher inclination the drainage is performed by disposing the water over the basic covering materials which should not be sealed between each other. This is due to different methods of coverage. The pitched roof is covered with small-shaped materials and scales. The flat roof is covered with materials that are homogenously merged.
While the flat roof is representative for the Mediterranean areas, the pitched roof is familiar for mountainous areas. The big difference concerning the flat roof is that with a few exceptions, the pitched roof is safer to rain while the flat roof is made waterproof.
There are different shapes of roofs and their inclination determines the material to be used for coverage.
